Capability — Honing
Tighter Bores. Better Finishes. Longer Parts.
Correct bore size, straightness and surface finish when an earlier machining operation cannot economically deliver the final internal condition.
Honing provides controlled bore correction and finishing after drilling or other machining operations. The finished-bore outcome comes first here; diameter, length, finish and process detail is available below for the technical buyer validating fit.

Applications & suitable jobs
- Final sizing and surface finish after deep-hole drilling
- Long parts requiring a consistent bore over their full length
- Irregular holes where other sizing processes are uneconomic
- Honing-only support for other manufacturers
Technical detail
How honing works, where it is used, how it relates to deep-hole drilling, and the diameter and length capability.
- Diameter
- bores from 38.1 mm (1.5 in) diameter
- Part length
- parts up to 4.5 m (15 ft) long
The process
Honing rotates abrasive stones on a mandrel inside the bore, removing material in a precise, controlled manner to reach exact size and an exceptional surface finish. It can also size irregular holes where other processes may not be economical.
Complement to deep-hole drilling
Drilling produces the deep bore; honing delivers its final size, straightness and finish. Because both are in-house at MIR, a drilled part moves straight to finishing without a second supplier.
Capacity
Bores from 38.1 mm (1.5 in) diameter, on parts up to 4.5 m (15 ft) long. Send the bore specification for confirmation of diameter, length and finish on your specific part.
Frequently asked questions
What surface finish can honing reach?
Finish capability depends on material, diameter and starting condition — state the target finish on the specification and it is confirmed at review.
Can you hone a part another shop machined?
Yes. Honing-only work for other manufacturers is a standard service.
My bore is long — is that a problem?
Long parts are the specialty: capacity runs to 4.5 m (15 ft) of length.
